Re(3): then make the line put don't cover the sprite just use the second color to be use you didn't mess up and then remove the color from that sprite and then hold L and merge the line (layer 2) to layer one and copy back the color from that sprite, that's all I got to say.
Re(2): Once the line is there or you got the ground sprite from a back put the sprite on the ground/line to do it safely hold L (if you have advance tools on while selecting the copy from the 3rd option on the screen and let go of L and it should be placed or put the sprite...
Re: It depends on how you use sprites. You can either use the grounds or by simply making a line by: holding start and move the stylus or by touching the touchscreen on your DSi[XL]/3DS(2DS)[old/"New"] and then let go of start and the line should be there...
