Hey there everyone, DeepRising here with the Weekly Newsletter and Weekly Topic competition.
Let me first apologize for the absence of last week's Newsletter and Topic results.
This was due to technical difficulties involving internet connection, so we couldn't get the topic judged and reviewed as usual, and had to postpone the Newsletter until the following week.
But don't worry, we're picking up right where we left off, with the winning entry reviews of our last topic, Pokemon.
Then, after that, we're moving straight along with what would have been last week's topic, Massive!
So, those of you who have made entries for the Weekly Topic - Massive, kindly post them this week instead.
The channel is open now!
(Please note: All subsequent topics listed at the end of the Newsletter, have now also been moved forward by one week.)
Ok, now on with the winning Flipnotes from last week's Topic, "Pokemon".
Well done to everyone who entered
Our first Topic winning Flipnote this week is this absolutely awesome collection of Pokemon Fan Art, by matthieu.
Featuring no less than forty seven beautifully drawn characters, each and every one with its own background, and rendered with exemplary line work, fantastic shading, and excellent composition.
It's a real tour de force of Flipnote artistry.
Our next winning Weekly Topic Flipnote, by BookKeeper, features two great Pokemon characters, Pikachu, and the evil Rayquaza!
With the use of both multi-tone silhouettes, and full shaded animation, they engage in a dramatic game of cat and mouse, amidst the towering, mountainous peaks of a surreal landscape.
A pokemon bounces energetically about the screen, with fabulous squash and stretch character animation, in this superbly executed MV, and second Weekly Topic winning Flipnote, by matthieu.
The editing and performance punctuation are perfectly timed along with the music and sing along lyrics, which makes for a truly toe tapping Pokemon tale.
Enjoy!
Brock's got it bad, for both Jenny, the police woman, and Joy, the nurse, in this musical Rom-Com, Weekly Topic winner, by マソメンミ.
Based on fascinating characters from the Pokemon series, and scored to the music from the show, it's both jocular, and whimsical, with a good helping of romance to-boot.
But can he ever decide which of them he will pick?
When Gloria encounters a wild Pokemon, she takes it down forcefully, with a Pika-ball to the back of the head, in this winning Topic Flipnote, by Ⓡí©kⓎ.
What a throwing arm she has!
But, how was she to know it was actually a Pokemon fan, in a fancy dress costume!
Whoops!
That's red faces all round!
Set to the haunting music of Lavender Town, this Topic winner, by Hiashi, mixes both imported photo, and hand drawn animation, to illustrate the differences between Pokemon games.
We think Lavender Town sounds a bit scary, to be honest!
(Que sounds of knees knocking together.)
The friendly Pikach looks much more like our cup of tea.
PSI_Vinten has created this spectacular, cyclical, animated drawing of the City of Aspertia, a beloved Pokemon game location, for this winning entry.
A striking aerial view, with Pokemons gazing across the vista, is brought yet further to life with shooting stars in the night sky.
It's both tranquil, and impressive.
The three variations of Pikachu are introduced by Professor Oak, from the Pokemon games, in this winning entry, by ⒷIⒷⒷⒶ.
We loved the new form of lip-synch used for the professor here. The way he suddenly pops into three dimensions every time he talks, had us chuckling for ages.
With the skillful combination of photo-silhouette, and hand drawn, rotational animation, Marco has created a Pokemon Pikachu in a revolving office chair.
What a great job. But surely he must be getting dizzy by now!
This week's topic is about all things that are massive, enormous, and vast!
From the immense pyramids of ancient Egypt, and the largest mountain in the world, Everest, to colossal creatures like the blue whale, and mythical giants and monsters of fantasy and fiction.
There's so many gigantic possibilities to choose from!
But if you're a bit stuck, here's an idea you could try.
Another way of thinking about this topic, is to make things look massive, that in fact are not!
You can do this by having them viewed from very low angles (As if, looking up at them from the ground). This is known as a worm's eye view.
Anything at all will look absolutely huge with this technique.
Top Tips:
Single point perspective is very useful when drawing objects from a worm's-eye-view.
You could also try using your DSi camera as an aid with worm's-eye-views and perspectives.
Position the object you're photographing over the camera lense, so you can see it in extreme perspective, and take a picture.
Then import the photo into Flipnote, on layer 2, and trace it onto layer 1.
(This technique could also work for a photo Flipnote.)
.
Whichever way you decide to go, let's get Massively creative with this topic!
Make sure to post your entries to the Weekly Topic channel Weekly Topic - Massive and the deadline for your entries is August 8th (12pm EST / 4pm GMT).
Also, we would encourage you to add a description to your Flipnotes. This is your opportunity to explain any points of interest and specific details that we could feature in the topic winner reviews.
And don't forget, if you want a cool thumbnail picture on your Flipnote, whichever frame you save the Flipnote on, that will become the thumbnail. So choose your favorite frame for this, or add in a cool title page at the end, and save on that.
Keep on Flipnoting and the best of luck with your entries.
